The only Asian country to make the list, and the largest – the Tokyo Metro area alone has more residents than any other country on this list – Japan has the third-largest economy in the world, and the fifth-largest military budget, even though the military has not been used in a conflict since World War II. A comprehensive health care system has led to high life expectancy and incredibly low infant mortality. The citizens of Japan are very peaceful, with low rates of homicide and violent crime, and no internal conflict.

With an extremely high quality of life, Switzerland has the highest wealth per adult of any country in the world, with its two major cities of Zurich and Geneva being in the top 10 worldwide as far as cities with the highest quality of life goes. Like many countries on the list, part of the success can be attributed to a multiple-party system – of the seven seats on the governing Federal Council, five different parties are represented. The Federal Council acts as the Head of State, instead of a single ruler. Historically neutral, Switzerland’s armed forces are part of some peacekeeping missions around the world but have never been in a full-blown conflict, only having been mobilized for strike-breaking and demonstration.
