gaming laptops under $1,500

With all the fantastic new PC games coming out this year, you'll want a top-notch gaming laptop that won't stall, reduce your graphics settings, or slow down your gaming in any way. In the past I'd usually recommend going for a desktop PC when it comes to gaming, but honestly the last couple of years have seen huge laptop performance improvements, increased GPU, and lowered prices across the board.

With the added bonus of being highly portable, there's almost no reason not to prefer a laptop to a desktop these days (alright, desktops are still cheaper and more modular, but not by much - and of course, they're not very portable).

Today's list takes a look at the best gaming laptops that can be bought for under $1,500 USD. If you're on a budget, you'll probably want to get yourself one of these bad boys.

Acer Aspire V15 Nitro

Acer Aspire V15 Nitro

Acer hasn’t always been known as a high-performance brand, but they’re clearly working hard to change that. This laptop is a beast. In addition to its two hard drives – a 1TB sata and a 256 GB SSD – it’s one of the first gaming laptops to support 4k resolutions.

Cons: A lot of people have complained that the keys feel rubbery, and the trackpad doesn’t work well. Also, there are a lot of older programs and games that don’t work or don’t look great on the 4k screen. A few people say the built-in wireless card tends to be spotty.

Pros: For the programs that are compatible, the 4k screen looks amazing. The speakers are also above-par. The specs overall are very good and the laptop is definitely attractive.

Price: $1,447
Hard Drive: 1 TB HDD+ 256 GB SSD
Screen Size: 15.6 inches
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX860M

Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p

Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p

Lenovo is known more for their business-line products than their consumer products, but they’re trying to change that with their IdeaPad series.

This is not a normal consumer laptop with some backlit keys – this is a powerhouse gaming laptop. I’ve yet to find a game that can’t run on it... as long as the power adapter is plugged in. Although the average battery life is listed as 4 hours, if you plan on gaming while on battery power, you’ll only get an hour or so out of it.

Cons: The power brick is enormous, and both it and the touchpad get extremely hot. The hard drive is only 5400 RPM, which is not the best choice for gaming. It also has less RAM than the other entries on this list.

Pros: It has an Ultrabay, which allows you to swap out additional graphics cards, hard drives, or DVD/Bluray players. It comes with JBL speakers, which produce amazing sound for a laptop. The price fluctuates depending on the website and current supply, but it’s usually available at a competitive price point.

Price: $1,299.99
Hard Drive: 1 TB HDD
Screen Size: 15.6 inches
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT750M
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7-4700MQ
Graphics RAM: 2 GB
RAM: 8 GB DDR3
Average Battery Life: 4 hours

Alienware ALW14-5002sLV

Alienware ALW14-5002sLV

Alienware is one of the most well-known producers of high quality gaming PCs. They set the standard for the traditional look of gaming laptops, with back-lit keyboards and LEDs.

Unfortunately, Alienware’s are also well-known for being extremely expensive. For anything larger than a 14 inch screen, you’ll have to go above the $1,500 limit.

Cons: Again, the hard drive is only 5400 RPM, which is a little unforgivable at this price point. There have reports that the power cable is in a location that makes it prone to damage, so watch out for that.

Pros: For people who want to spend time configuring the backlit keyboard and other LEDs, there are many different options to let them customize it however they want. The performance is as expected if you’re familiar with the Alienware brand.

Price: $1,449.99
Hard Drive: 1 TB HDD
Screen Size: 14 inches
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX765M
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7-4700MQ
Graphics RAM: 2 GB
RAM: 16 GB DDR3
Average Battery Life: 2 hours

ASUS ROG GL551JM-EH74

ASUS ROG GL551JM-EH74

The ASUS ROG series is one of the most popular lines of gaming laptops. There were a handful of different ROG models that could have been included in this list, but this one was chosen because of the low price and high customer ratings.

Cons: Some customers have complained about heat, while others say they haven’t had that problem. The screen is TN, which means the viewing angles are much narrower. The hard drive is a little small for gamers, even if it is an SSD. The trackpad mouse has some response-time issues.

Pros: Look at that price!! This laptop packs a lot of high-end specs into a value-priced machine. It’s highly serviceable and customizable, with an optical drive bay that could easily hold a second hard drive. It also has a light-weight power brick.

Price: $1,079
Hard Drive: 256 GB SSD
Screen Size: 15.6 inches
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX860M
Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7-4710HQ
Graphics RAM: 2 GB
RAM: 16 GB DDR3
Average Battery Life: 2.5 hours

MSI GT70 Dominator-2293

MSI GT70 Dominator-2293

I had a hard time choosing between this and the ROG for the top spot, but the Dominator won out with its screen size, graphics card, and battery life. This laptop is available in many different configurations, with price adjustments of course. MSI has long been known as a great brand for gamers, and the Dominator-2293 is no exception.

Cons: This configuration doesn’t come with an SSD, and adding one brings it above the $500 price point. It’s on the heavy side, but that’s to be expected with a 17 inch screen.

Pros: The graphics card rivals the performance of a desktop model, especially with 3 GB of dedicated RAM. The mechanical keyboard is great for RTS gamers and programmers, and the battery lasts longer than any other computer on this list. Overall, this laptop can replace your desktop computer without sacrificing any performance.

Price: $1,410.99
Hard Drive: 1 TB HDD
Screen Size: 17.3 inches
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX970M
Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7
Graphics RAM: 3 GB
RAM: 16 GB DDR3
