10 Fun Things To Do When You're Bored At Home

When you're stuck at home and can't go anywhere, it can get really tedious looking at the same four walls every day. I find that it's even worse when there's no spare cash lying around for a treat, either. If you have kids and they're off school for a few weeks, I really feel your pain, as it seems like their cries of "Mom, I'm bored!" are endless.

Sometimes, all you need is someone to come in with fresh eyes and point out all the fun things that you can do when you're bored at home, with things you've already got lying about. That someone is me! I've come up with some fun ideas of things to do at home, for adults and children, whether the weather is good or bad. The best part about all of these? They're all completely free.

Clear up the garden

I know, this sounds more like a chore and hard work than something fun, but trust me - you can make it as fun as you want it to be, and it is so rewarding. If you're feeling energetic, then I suggest starting by cutting back old vegetation, to give yourself a good base to start from. From there, you don't even have to go out and buy new plants to transform your garden into something wonderful (although you could if you wanted to). Simply plant seeds from plants which you already have, or ask friends and family for cuttings which you can plant and turn into a new plant of your own.

With one day's work you can do something practical, work on your tan at the same time, and you'll be surprised at how satisfying it is! Then sit back and let nature do the rest. You can get involved in this no matter how big your outside space is - even if you only have a balcony, give it a sweep, then put up a trellis and some pot plants. If you're not very green-fingered, you can still get involved - repaint that fence panel like you've been meaning to do for months, clean up your gas grill and garden furniture, or maybe even transform your old shed into a usable summer house!

Spring clean and customize your wardrobe

We all have those old items of clothing lurking at the back of our cupboards which we haven't worn in years, or which looked great in the changing room but horrendous at home. Now is your chance to clear all of that out, to make space for new clothes! Toss out anything you haven't worn in the past year - you could either give them to friends, pass them on to those in need, or for those items which are still in tip-top condition, sell them to make yourself a bit of money.

This is a good opportunity for you to acquire a whole new wardrobe, without spending any extra money either, by customizing what you already have. This can be done by all members of the family - cut off an old pair of jeans to make shorts, or cut up an old T-shirt into a selection of shapes, which you can then use to appliqué onto a plain bag, for example. Shoes are fun for boys to customize, by dying shoelaces into bright, funky colors, which will give your sneakers a new lease of life. By having a good clear out like this, you can get rid of stuff you no longer need or want, make room for something new, revitalize what you already have, possibly make yourself some money, and have loads of fun in the process!

Camping isn't just an outdoors, warm weather event! Pop up tents are small and fun, so there's no reason why you can't clear some space in your living room and put one up indoors! Alternatively, make use of your outdoor space - camping in the garden is a fun way to experience the great outdoors, without the expense of going away, or the hassle of living without your home comforts. Why not fire up your gas grill and cook your food outdoors? In the past, I have even roasted marshmallows in the fireplace indoors, which just enhances the indoors camping experience - bring out some sleeping bags as well, and you're all set!

Build a fort!

You are never too old to build a fort. I don't care whether you're 12 years old and want to hide out with the pet cat, or whether you're 42 years old and want to hide out from your wife - it has to be done! Whether you go small by draping blankets and tablecloths over the dining room table, or go big by building an all-out treehouse, building a fort is one of the best ways to have fun no matter what your age. Once you're done building, then the best part comes...take along a book, a friend, or something cool to do, and hang out!

Dance like nobody is watching. This is one of the best ways to have fun and keep fit at the same time! If you have kids or just fancy letting your hair down, then just turn up some music and have a good old boogie around the house, or you could even try making up your own dance routine! YouTube is a great, free resource for thousands of dance routine lessons, so browse online if you're looking for something more structured.

Alternatively, if you would like to focus on the workout side of things more, then organize your very own keep fit routine at home; use the tools available around you, such as stairs, heavy things for lifting, and even your dog to go running with! This is particularly fun for men who fancy having fun being active around the house, but without going all out and dancing.
